Photoshop CS4 – Collapse Layer Goups

Sep 01
2010

It occurred to me while using Photoshop CS4 that ther should be a shortcut or menu item to collapse all layer groups at once as you can have over a hundred in some documents.

You can collapse all root layer groups by pressing:

cmd + left mouse click (Mac)
ctrl + left mouse click (Windows)

You click on any root layer arrow and it will collapse all root layer groups, but annoyingly doesn’t collapse all layer groups within that root layer group.

Maybe it’s a hidden function somewhere but I have a feeling it’s been missed out. Does anyone know any different?

Apple TV – Bonus For Everyone Else

I was just reading some comments on engadget on an article about the new Apple TV

There was a comment/argument about Apple TV and what it will do to competitors. The argument on one hand was that it will be beneficial to others, and the opposition that it will be detrimental.

I’ll give my thoughts from what I’ve observed over the last few years which other businesses seem to have picked up on:

  • iPhone: When the first one came out, a few people had PDA’s, most had Nokia, Sony Ericsson or Motorola phones. Probably less than 1% had a BlackBerry and HTC were unheard of. The iPhone increased awareness so people learned about apps (i.e. “There’s an app for that”) which increased awareness for Android. There are now more Android users than iPhone users, BlackBerry are a worldwide power and HTC have a huge product range of smartphones (including the excellent Desire).
  • iPad: People asked why? What’s the point? Then, through some relatively minimal advertising and word of mouth, people started to pick it up and it’s now a best seller. Before the iPad, tablet PC’s were a joke. Now there are more new tablets than smartphones, and even eReaders (lolz) like Kindle have been selling – and they’re in black and white! They all have apps, just like the iPad, and some even have a fully blown Windows/Linux OS.
  • Apple TV? Considering the debates about whether it is any good mention loads of alternatives, all of those manufacturers and systems get free press just for having a product on the market. I myself learned of about 10 alternatives. I didn’t even know you could use a PS3 to do everything. I’ve got some old pc’s lying around just waiting for a Linux OS (or if I’m desperate, Windows) to be slapped on them to be used as a web TV slave.

My obvious conclusion is that Apple give other manufacturers a huge boost. Apple’s product are so expensive (except for iPad and Apple TV) that their exclusivity creates a huge market gap to be filled by people who want, say, an iPhone but don’t fancy spending £60 a month on a contract.

Please feel free to add any comments (keep ‘em clean and factually based).
